Choose a consistent structure
A useful timeline answers “what happened, when, and how do we know?” Start with columns for event date, description, source, certainty, and follow-up. Add a separate “record created” date when a document was produced later. This prevents a later recollection from appearing to be a note made at the time.
Download the blank case timeline and save it locally. Use neutral filenames for records and keep a private folder linking each filename to the original. The worksheet is an organizational aid, not a court-approved form.
Write one event per row
| Event date | Description | Source | Open question |
|---|---|---|---|
| June 3, morning | Delivery arrived with visible box damage | Photo-01 and delivery receipt | Exact delivery time |
| June 4 | Customer service received a report | Email-02 | Response deadline stated in policy |
| June 8 | Replacement estimate received | Estimate-03 | Whether shipping is included |
This fictional example uses a property dispute to show the method. The dates are not suggested legal deadlines. Avoid combining several days into one paragraph when the sequence could matter.
Preserve uncertainty and disagreement
Write “approximately 3 p.m.” if that is what you remember. If two records disagree, keep both entries and note the conflict. Do not revise an original note silently after receiving new information. Add a dated correction explaining the source of the change.
Use factual wording: “The email says the item was inspected” is different from “The company definitely inspected the item.” Likewise, identify whether you observed something personally or heard it from another person.
Use the timeline to prepare the next conversation
The U.S. Courts’ civil case overview explains that litigation can involve gathering and exchanging evidence. A timeline helps you locate records, but it does not make every listed item admissible or prove a claim by itself.
Before a consultation, highlight the three most important unknowns and the documents that could resolve them. Bring the timeline alongside the underlying records. Keep personal identifiers out of any version entered into an AI tool, and have a qualified professional check legal significance and deadlines.
